To reduce the impact (and damage) of the curb-curbed front wheel, you normally pull the handlebars up briefly at the right time. If the rearmost (half) wheel is in contact with the road, this movement will be much more difficult. But if that wheel is about to touch the ground, lifting the front wheel will make a big mess.
