Pre-World War II, it started with Plymouth 6-cylinder engines that tried to beat the "small" Ford V8. He made a LONG putt with six, skinny sticks. A shaved head would have added strength, but the compression became so high that the start of pushing was required. Improve the timing. Add alcohol to the gas, puncture the carb jets and let Plymouth scream for a mile or so. Then all that pressure on those long skinny sticks made them so hot that they would bend. Cars installed in this way were derided as hot RODS. Then bad became good...
